This Weekend in Philadelphia: A Latin Day Party on the Water, Peruvian Pastries in Bella Vista, and Free Sunday Comedy
Published September 2, 2026

Labor Day weekend puts 38 events on the Philadelphia calendar between Friday, September 4 and Sunday, September 6, and eight of them are free. The weekend leans hard toward making things — tufting, chain mail, charm jewelry, two separate sip-and-paints — with a Latin day party on the water and a Peruvian bakery pop-up breaking up the craft tables. Five of the eight free events land on Sunday, so the cheap end of the weekend is back-loaded. The eight picks below run from Friday lunchtime to Sunday night and cover both ends of the price range.

Top picks for the weekend

No. 01Free
Yay Diff x Bodie
Friday, 12:00–6:00 PM • BODIE Fairmount • Free
Yay Diff sets up inside BODIE Fairmount for six hours of custom charm jewelry, and the design is yours to make — you pick the charms and build the piece you leave with. There is nothing to pay at the door; you only cover what you actually make. A midday Friday window that wide makes it a stop on the way to something else rather than a plan in itself.

Friday Night Magic (Commander)
Friday, 5:00–10:00 PM • 102 W Berks St • $10
Bubs runs this on the first and third Friday of the month, and September 4 is the first one. Ten dollars for a seat, BYOB, with snacks and drinks for sale — bring a pod or turn up alone and get seated. Commander is the default format, though the host takes others, and the five-hour window means arriving at seven is still arriving on time.

No. 03
Intro to Chain Mail
Friday, 6:00–9:00 PM • 2923-25 East Thompson Street • $75
Three hours spent weaving a chain mail bracelet or necklace out of loose jump rings with a pair of jewelry pliers. The class starts at handling the pliers and opening and closing rings, then builds them into a classic weave, so no prior metalwork is assumed. Bring your own drink — the shop keeps glasses on hand so you don't need to bring disposables.

No. 04
Mini-tuft beginner rug tufting workshop
Saturday, 10:00 AM–1:00 PM • Tuft the World • $75
The short version of Tuft the World's tufting class, and the one to take if you are not sure the craft is for you. You run a power tufting machine to make a rug or wall hanging from a provided design or one you bring, covering frame setup, backing cloth and threading along the way. Supplies are included and the finished piece leaves with you; three hours on a Saturday morning, done by one.

Dulcemena Pop-up: Peruvian treats!
Saturday, from 12:00 PM • STUMP: Bella Vista • Free
Dulcemena, a small-batch Peruvian bakery, takes over STUMP Bella Vista at noon and stays until it sells out — so the real closing time depends on how fast the trays go. The posted menu is Peruvian tres leches, alfajores by the box of six, caramel dream carrot cake, chocolate chip cookies, and lomo saltado and chicken asado empanadas. Free to walk in, lunch and dessert are on the same table, and STUMP sells plants if you want to leave with more than a box.

No. 06
“Written In the Stars” 🌙 Light-Up Paint and Sip Experience at Tapster Philly (21+)
Saturday, 1:00–3:00 PM • Tapster Philadelphia • $40
A guided two-hour paint session where the canvas is a night sky with glowing nebulas and your own zodiac constellation worked into it. The finish is what separates it from a standard sip-and-paint — fairy lights get wired into the canvas so the piece lights up as wall décor at home. First-timers are explicitly included, and Tapster is a self-pour bar, so drinks run at your own pace — 21+ only.

No. 07Free
Sundays on the Skook🏃
Sunday, 10:00–11:00 AM • Cosmic Café and Ciderhouse • Free
A free three-mile run along the Schuylkill that starts at Boathouse Row and goes off every Sunday morning. The host pitches it at race trainees and at people who just want to move and meet somebody, and says all paces are welcome. Three miles is short enough to do on no training and an hour is over before the rest of Sunday starts.

No. 08Free
Evening Announcements Comedy
Sunday, 6:00–7:00 PM • Evil Genius Beer Company • Free
A free standup hour at Evil Genius Beer Company, running every Sunday at six and built around the week's news. One hour, no cover, no ticket to sort out in advance. It is the lowest-stakes thing on this list — early enough to leave the evening intact, and free enough that a bad week costs you nothing.

These are eight of 38, and four more free ones didn't fit: East Falls at the East Falls Farmers' Market on Saturday morning, a Southeast Asian Market Meetup in FDR Park at noon on Sunday, Golden Hour at BLKBERRY the same afternoon, and a second Yay Diff pop-up, Yay Diff x Ana Thorne. The full Friday-through-Sunday calendar, with the salsa classes, the rooftop yoga and everything running at the craft studios, is on the Philadelphia this weekend page.
